المستخلص: Conservation is a new fangled movement in India. Even from the perspective of Cultural Internationalism, the world has become more dedicated to preserve and protect (and promote) its cultural and natural heritage in the last five decades. The first Congress of Architects and Specialists of Historic Buildings was organised in Paris in 1957 and in 1964 'Venice Charter’ was conceived. India is an active member State on the World Heritage from 1977 but a need for protection of Heritage was understood as early as two centuries ago with the enactment of the first ever antiquarian legislation in India known as Bengal Regulation XIX of 1810. The Ancient Monuments Preservation Act, 1904 ushered in a new era. Yet, the notion of Conservation has been both timeless and universal; in the past it was more of a default practice built in the day to day living and today it has emerged as a more specialized discipline with manifold complexities. The paper raises these challenges, a lot of which will possibly have international relevance. These deal with the values in Heritage, the domain of conservation, the gulf between theory and practice, legislation, ethics, technology, sustenance of living traditions, community participation and decision-making.
