Imam Malik (May Allah have mercy on him) was very popular in his era and of great reputation even after his epoch. Many Muslim scholars belonging to several schools among the four followed schools of thought and others have praised him and commended his great advancement and achievement in knowledge. They also commended him for his great book "Al-Muwatta", which a group of scholars considered to have occupied the highest level of authenticity, giving it precedence over other books authored in that period. They even preferred it to Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. As part of their exposition of the position of Al-Muwatta, they stated that it had a great impact on the books of Hadith. To buttress this point, one of them said, "Authors of the six most authentic books of Hadith and Al-Hakim in Al-Mustadrak have geared every effort to link and render successively uninterrupted those traditions of Imam Malik with sporadic chains of narration. They also ascribed directly to the Holy Prophet those traditions whose chains were limited to the generation of the Sahabah (companions of the Prophet). Hence these books came as complements and commentaries on Al-Muwatta, as it involves no tradition whose chain has been limited to a noble companion of the Prophet or to some persons belonging to the generation succeeding that of the companions but must have a trace in the Noble Qur'an and Sunnah". Statements such as this have been made by several scholars. This research tries to investigate this statement to explain if Imam Al-Bukhari and Muslim in their Sahih and Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi in their Sunan have actually been impacted by this book called Al-Muwatta. This is the reason why I have titled the research as "The impact of Imam Malik and his Al-Muwatta on Sahih Al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim and the Sunan of Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi". I categorized it into a brief introduction of the life of Imam Malik; his name, lineage, quest for knowledge, his most prominent teachers, students, status and the position of his book "Al-Muwatta", all in brief as well as two chapters as follows: Chapter One: General impact of "Al-Muwatta" on authors of the six most authentic books of Hadith. Chapter Two: Special impact of "Al-Muwatta" on the art of jurisprudence and science of the chains of transmission. The researcher could realize that Al-Muwatta of Imam Malik is a great sea of knowledge where he deposited various sciences and benefits. According to him, all scholars that succeeded him have benefited from it. The researcher further unveiled the great impact of Imam Malik and his book "Al-Muwatta" on the aforementioned learned scholars. However, time was not in his favour to make exhaustive account of all those scholars nor to follow up other scholars who are said to have been impacted by Imam Malik because such studies are based on brevity. Yet, as the Arabian adage may have it "the area surrounding the neck is sufficient for you in a necklace", meaning that one should be sufficed by a little which is the core of a whole. May the blessings and peace of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and noble companions and all those that trail their track until the Day of Judgment.
