المستخلص: A wife may find herself capable of contributing towards societal construction and production through engaging in work that suits her nature. Alternatively, the myriad requirements presented by life may force her to go out to work and this may undermine the very reason of her right to spousal economic support. Because of this, the question has always been about the ruling for a wife's work, the effect this has on her right to mandatory spousal support and the extent of the permissibility of forcing her to contribute financially towards household expenses in return for permission to work. There is no doubt that these questions have gained prominence especially after women have entered the workforce alongside men. This paper tackles the answers to these questions in Islamic jurisprudence and shows the related implemented provisions according to the Egyptian constitutional and personal status laws. The paper is divided into three chapters: - The first chapter comprises the concept of spousal maintenance, the ruling for it and the conditions for its obligations. - The second chapter comprises a discussion on the status of women, their primary role according to Islam, the ruling for a husband's permission for his wife to work and the impact this has on her right to spousal maintenance. - The third chapter comprises the ruling for a husband stipulating upon marriage that his working wife must contribute towards family expenses and the impact this condition has on her right to expenses, the ruling for a wife who volunteers to contribute towards household expenses and the extent of the permissibility of forcing her to contribute.
