|b The Image of Western Europe in the Maghreb historiographies.- Most of the Maghrebian historians studied the European world during the 18th and 19th centuries. Their viewpoint was merely a continuation of the conflict between the Islamic east and the Christian west, especially during the Crusades. This picture prevailed until the Maghrebians started travelling to Europe and visiting its countries. Thanks to this new contact, a new positive image of the Europeans emerged in the mind of the Muslims. As a result, Western Europe became the favourite destination of a great number of adventurers, travellers and historians during the 18th and 19th centuries. These latter have registered their travels and chronicles, using images full of admiration and astonishment about Europe sometimes, and invoking others reminiscent of the traditional hostile view about it other times (Ouddene Boughofala).
