This paper investigates nouns used by al-Aṣmaʿī in his book Al-Wuhūsh. They were divided into two groups; the first is for the names which have linguistic roots in Muʿjam al-Mushtark al-Lughawī al-ʿArabī al-Sāmī, and the second is for those which do not have roots in it. Then the first group was sub-divided into three groups based on their semantics: a) the names which have roots in the Muʿjam and al-Aṣmaʿī explicitly used them as names for animals, b) the names which have roots in the Muʿjam but were implicitly used to denote names of animals, while also share semantic connotations with some linguistic derivatives from the same roots, c) the names which appeared to have no semantic relation between the name used for an animal and linguistic derivatives of its root in the Muʿjam. The second group was also sub-divided into two groups; a) Arabic names whose roots are not mentioned in this book, and b) for the names whose origins are not Arabic. The most significant findings in this paper were as follows: There are names which are used to denote the same animal in some of the Semitic languages including Arabic and these names are 53 names. There are 90 names for animals which are exclusively Arabic and not used in the other Semitic languages. The Arabic names for animals which share some sematic element (in a general sense) with some linguistic derivatives in other Semitic languages but are not names for the animal itself were found to be 116 names. The Arabized and foreign names were found to be just 6 names. The paper distinguished between the names of animals which have shared roots in Semitic languages and those which do not and, thus judgements were possible to make as whether a name is ancient and indigenous to the language or not.
