يتسم مشروع الحوار الحضاري بنزعته المستقبلية من خلال توظيفه لبناء مستقبل أفضل للإنسانية، إذ هو أكبر من كونه مشروعاً آنياً، بل هو رؤية لمستقبل انساني أفضل، ومن هنا تبلورت فلسفة الحوار الحضاري، المتمثلة في ايجاد ارضية مشتركة للقاء والتفاهم والتكامل بين المجموعات السكانية ذات الهوية الثقافية المختلفة. على الرغم من الدعوات المتعددة إلى حوار الحضارات، فما زالت الرؤية الفكرية الخاصة الممتلئة بالأفكار السياسية هي التي تصنع مفاهيم الحوار، دون النظر إلى العقيدة الفكرية الجماعية للمجتمعات التي تمثلها هوياتها الثقافية الخاصة، فضلاً عن امكانيات القوة التي تلقي بضلالها على الحوار ومساراتها، ويبقى مع كل ما تقدم مستقبل حوار الحضارات مرتبطاً بتشكيلية النظام العالمي خلال المراحل القادمة التي سيكون لها تأثير بالغ في تحديد مسار الحوار من خلال منظومة العولمة وآلياتها. لذلك فان البشرية ستواجه خيارات مختلفة: إما اعادة انتاج نظام الهيمنة تحت شعار النظام العالمي الجديد، أو خلق نظام ما بعد الهيمنة وهو نظام يستمد مشروعيته من البحث عن ارضية مشتركة لتفاعل المدنيات واندماجها والمحافظة على الخصوصيات الثقافية.
