المستخلص:	This study tackles the most important characteristics of shanty dwelling in Cairo Govemorate where available data show that this phenomenon is perceptibly growing. This urban "bidonville" pattern generally reflects very low standard of living and deteriorated demographic characteristics as well as poor public facilities and miserable conditions of living like scarcity of potable water and poor, if not completely absent, sanitary services. Ezbet Al-Haggana has been chosen as a case study because of its salient features as a shanty area as well as its rapidly growing inhabitants and their deteriorated socio-economic conditions. The results of this research have been interpreted in conformity with the field study to conclude with some important recommendations that may help dealing with the phenomenon in question within the context of improving the inhabitants' life conditions and fighting poverty pockets.
