المستخلص: Artemisia herba alba Asso. (Asteraceae) is perennial, strongly aromatic herb that grown in North Africa (Libya ) and most of Europe and Asia. The aerial parts of Artemisia herba alba Asso. Was collected from the south of Tripoli (Tarhona city) at January 2007 .The powdered of aerial parts (IKg) was extracted successively with n-hexane, chloroform and methanol in soxhelt apparatus .The crude chloroform extract was subjected to an column chromatography and preparative thin layer chromatography resulted in isolation of compound {AS-4}. The structures of this compound was elucidated by H1 -NMR and confirmed by comparison with an authentic sample [TLC and IR] Artemisia herba alba is studied here for the first time in Libya. Disk diffusion and Micro dilution techniques were used to determine the antibacterial activity of (n_hexan, Chloroform, Methanol) extracts of Artemisia herba alba against one species of Gram positive strain (Staphylococcus aureus) and three species of Gram negative strain (Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp. and Pseudomonas aerugenosa). Imipenem antibiotic discs were used as reference strain. The zone of inhibition varies depending on different bacterial species and type of extracts. The a average diameter of inhibition zone ranges from 8 to 12mm and 14 to 16 mm for chloroform and methanol extracts respectively. Chloroform and methanolic extracts were effective against the Gram positive S. aureus with the least concentration (MIC > 6.25) whilst, the higher concentration (100,50 mg/ml) were effective against the other Gram negative bacteria.
