Dried ground peanut shells impregnated with either H3PO4 of various concentrations (in the range 30-70 mass%) were carbonized under nitrogen or steam-nitrogen atmosphere flows at temperatures in the range 400°C for 3 h. As a result of these processes , activated carbons with different pore sizes distribution and surface properties were obtained. The samples were characterized using sorption of nitrogen at 77K. Pore structure parameters were determined by applying the BET-and - methods. The pyrolysis temperature and the atmosphere on the final properties of the materials. It was demonstrated that steam inhibits the incorporation of heteroatoms into the carbon matrix. Activation of peanut shells in the presence of phosphoric acid together with steam gives micro porous carbons with high surface areas ranging from (737-1138 m2.g-1). |
