تبدو صور الصناعة عند العرب في العصر الأموي كثيرة في أشعار شعرائهم، ويلاحظ دارس هذا الشعر بوضوح جلي أن العرب في العصر الأموي عرفوا ضروباً مختلفة من الصناعات؛ وأتقنوا فنوناً كثيرة منها، وأن معرفتهم بها لم تتوقف عند تلك الصناعات التي تقتضيها ضرورة المعاش، كالصناعات المتعلقة بالبناء، أو الحياكة، أوالنجارة أو غيرها، بل تجاوزوا ذلك إلى صنائع أخرى مما تدعو إليه طبيعة الترف الذي عاشه بعض أهل العصر، مثل؛ الدباغة، وصناعة التماثيل. وقد عكس الشعراء الأمويون في كثير من قصائدهم وأشعارهم معرفة العرب بالصناعات المختلفة التي كانوا يقومون بها، فجاء هذا البحث ليميط اللثام عن موقف العرب من الصنعة وأهلها، وهل حقاً أن العربي كان يحتقر الصناعة ويزري بأهلها، وأنها كانت حكراً على الرقيق والعبيد والموالي؟ ثم ليدرس أهم الصناعات وأبرزها في العصر الأموي، وليكشف عن أماكن وجودها.
