|b The Economic Community of West African States is undoubtedly the best African international organization in terms of security mechanism, which it applied in conflict resolution in several countries such as Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Cote d’Voire. Thus, when the Gambian president Yahya Jammeh refused to leave his office after losing the election, ECOWAS states such as Senegal and Nigeria decided to intervene, through this organisation, to persuade him to step down. Both the African Union and the UN Security Council authorized ECOWAS to solve this problem peacefully. Senegal and other ECOWAS countries moved their troops near the Gambian border and gave Jammeh a last chance to quit. Consequently, Mauritania and Guinea succeeded to persuade him to leave without holding him accountable. So the elected president Adama Barrow returned to Gambia from Senegal, asking ECOWAS troops to stay there for three months. Barrow promised to revise decisions taken by Jammeh such as the withdrawal from Commonwealth. However, many challenges still face Barrow. Two prime challenges are the next parliamentary and local elections in April, as he must ensure their fairness and persuade all parties to take part in them
