يهدف هذا البحث إلى تسليط الضوء على الصحافة اللبنانية الرائدة التي ابتدأت منذ عصر التأسيس الصحفي ابتداءً من عام 1858 الذي شهد بزوغ أول صحيفة لبنانية وصولاً إلى عام 1914 تلك الصحافة التي عدت أساساً مهما للحركات التنويرية في لبنان خصوصاً والشرق العربي عموماً؛ إذ نلحظ أنها اضطلعت بدور ريادي في معالجة ومناقشة العديد من قضايا تلك الحقبة التي ظهرت فيها، ومثلت تطلعات روادها المجددين في تحقيق أهم أهدافهم الاستنارة، ولذلك لم تكن تلك الصحافة مجردة من أهداف واضحة المعالم كونها من أرسى دعائمها أهم وأبرز الشخصيات التنويرية اللبنانية ممن تعددت واختلفت اتجاهاتهم ومشاربهم الفكرية، وهو ما تمثل في تنوع عطائهم وإسهاماتهم في كتاباتهم وآرائهم وطروحاتهم الصحفية على اختلافها مما كون سمة بارزة في نتاجات وجهود تلك الصحافة في مرحلة الريادة والتأسيس. نلحظ إضافة لما تقدم خلال هذه الحقبة التأسيسية أن الصحافة اللبنانية قد أسهمت بدور فاعل في ترسيم معالم واقع الوعي الاجتماعي والسياسي والثقافي المحلي ذلك أنها عملت على نشر أفكار أعلام ومثقفي تلك المرحلة وتكوين توجهاتها على انتماءاتهم واتجاهاتهم مما حدى بها في إثراء الواقع الصحفي بخصائص النهضة تلك التي كانت بيروت قلبها النابض في الجسد اللبناني الذي شهد نهضة فكرية مبكرة وسابقة نسبياً لبعض البلدان العربية بالحركة الثقافية الحديثة كما مثلت سواء ما قام منها في لبنان أو خارجه وجها مشرقاً من التراث اللبناني والعطاء الحضاري فيه لا يقل إشراقاً عن الجوانب الأخرى لهذا التراث الذي يشكل فيه العطاء الصحفي هرماً شامخاً من البذل الفكري فكانت أن نشرت أفكار وآراء ومبادئ ومناهج ومذاهب ونظريات وتيارات علمية وفنية وسياسية وأدبية، وما روجت له من مصطلحات الحضارة في العلوم والفنون واللغة، ونتيجة لذلك عدت مصدراً حيا من مصادر دراسة التاريخ باعتبارها وثائق تاريخية مهمة لذا نراها مثلا قادت مساجلات ضد الفساد والاستعمار؛ كما أن معظم الاتجاهات والأفكار والتيارات المختلفة ضمن مدة الدراسة اتخذت من الصحافة مجالا لبروزها وتأثيرها في الرأي العام في تاريخ لبنان الحديث لأنها قامت على أعتاب الأنوار التي انطلقت من بوادر النهضة الحديثة في المشرق فتركز عليها أعلام وكتاب بارزين فكان أغلب مؤسسيها نسبيا أدباء وعلماء كبار في اللغة والثقافة والمعرفة.
