Cet article s’appuie sur les écrits d’Isabelle Eberhardt cette voyageuse infatigable entrée dans le célèbre cercle des écrivains du voyage, elle le doit à la densité et à l’élégance de ses belles lettres. Celles-ci sont d’autant plus précieuses pour nous Algériens que son oeuvre, en plus de ses qualités littéraires, est une mine d’informations sur les moeurs du pays faites de résistances et courage mais aussi de violences et d’archaïsmes. La "posture masculine" d’Isabel sa volonté de s'habiller en homme de se faire appeler par un nom et prénom autochtones : Mahmoud Essadi correspondent à une volonté de passer «inaperçue» dans le désert qui est loin d’être vide de vie grouillante. A l’époque, pour une femme errer dans le désert ne pouvait que lui attirer des ennuis de la part de bandits de grands chemins ou bien tout simplement être une proie sexuelle Il fallait donc à Isabelle ruser pour faire son métier de journaliste.
