|b This paper analyzes the status of French as a foreign language in the Sudanese linguistic environment concentrating on the last five decades. We trace the historical background of French language presence since its introduction into the Sudanese State in early 1822, passing by the different stages of its development in the specific context until we reach the present situation. The analysis of the current French language status in Sudan, compared to the social real utilization, has shown that this language is getting more and more wide-spread in the country. This can be confirmed also by analyzing vertically the different changes occurred during the long history of French in Sudanese linguistic map. We have also noticed that the French language has become a flourishing field of academic study and a wide-open door for scientific research. The political changes and foreign policies of the country have furthermore given the French language a strong move forward progression and strengthening of language presence. However, the most important detail that should be underlined is the accelerated expansion of French as an academic vector regarding the more intensive French departments at Sudanese universities and private centers inaugurated every year in the country.

|a تتناول هذه الورقة تحليل وضع الفرنسية لغة أجنبية بالسودان مع التركيز على حقبة الخمسة عقود الأخيرة. وقد تتبعنا في تحليلنا الخلفية التاريخية للغة الفرنسية في السودان منذ دخولها للبلاد في أوائل العام 1822 ومرورا بمختلف مراحل تطورها في السياق الخاص إلى أن وصلنا للوضع الحالي للغة الفرنسية. وقد أدي تحليل الوضع الحالي للغة الفرنسية في السودان، مقارنة باستخدام اللغة في مختلف الأوساط الاجتماعية، إلى التأكد من أن هذه اللغة تنتشر بصورة متزايدة في البلاد. ويمكن تأكيد هذه الخلاصة أكثر بالتحليل الرأسي لكل التغييرات التي طرأت خلال تاريخ الفرنسية الطويل في خارطة السودان اللغوية. كما لاحظنا أيضاء أن اللغة الفرنسية أصبحت مجالا ثرا للدراسة وبابا مفتوح على مصراعيه تجاه البحث العلمي. فالتغييرات السياسية والسياسات الخارجية للبلاد ساهمت أكثر في إعطاء اللغة الفرنسية دفعة قوية تجاه التطور وتقوية وضعيتها في السودان. على أية حال إن أكثر التفاصيل أهمية والتي يجب الإشارة إليها هي التوسع المتسارع للغة الفرنسية كدعامة أكاديمية حيوية نظرا للعدد الكبير لأقسام اللغة الفرنسية في الجامعات السودانية وفي المراكز الخاصة بالبلاد.
