حظيت عمارة المعبد في حضارة وادي الرافدين بقدر كبير من الأهمية باعتبارها بيت الله، والملك بطبيعة كونه نائبا عن الإله أو ممثلا له، قعد سؤلا عن الشؤون الدينية في مملكته، فإليه يعود أمر العناية بالمعابد وتشييدها أو ترميمها، وذلك نتيجة للاعتقاد السائد آنذاك بأن البشر خلقوا أصلا لخدمة الآلهة، وأن الحاكم يجب أن يكون أول خدمها، وعليه فقد كان بناء معبد جديد أو ترميمه يتوج بإقامة مجموعة من الشعائر والأعمال الدينية من أجل التأكد من أن رغبة الإله الخاص بذلك المعبد قد حققت على الوجه الأكمل.

The architecture of the temple in the civilisation of Mesopotamia valley was given great importance as the House of God, and the King, who by the virtue of being a representative of God, asked questions about the religious affairs of his kingdom. It is up to him to take care of the temples and renovate them. This was the result of the prevailing belief at the time that humans were originally created to serve the gods, The ruler must be the first servants, and therefore the construction or renovation of a new temple culminated in the establishment of a series of religious rites and works in order to ensure that the desire of the God of that temple has been achieved completely.
