The orientalist traveller Jean Louis Burckhardt visited Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah in 1230 H. (1815 A.D.). The rule in Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah was transferred at that time from the First Saudi State to Muhammad Ali Pasha. This traveller described the administration and political situation at that period of change. He brought about some comparisons between these two periods and their impact on the life of the inhabitants of Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah. He also described the economic situation in agriculture and the religious resources such as donation, endowment revenues, pilgrims services, trading and industry. Further, he brought to light the positive and negative qualities in all of these, and suggested means of improving them. He was meticulous in his description and skilful in analyzing the economic and political situations. He hit the nail on the head, except for the fact that he showed particular bias towards some religious beliefs.
