يهدف البحث إلى الكشف عن الأبعاد الثقافية والنفسية للإشاعة وتأثيرها في المجتمعات بشكل عامة وفي المجتمع المحلي خاصة. فالإشاعة من الموضوعات ذات البعد الأنثروبولوجي والاجتماعي والنفسي الذي يشكل تأثيراً واضحاً في حياة المجتمع من طريق التفاعل الذي يحدثه في الأنساق المختلفة مما يجعل أفراد المجتمع يعيشون في ظروف تتوافق إلى حد ما مع أسلوب الإشاعة المستعملة لدن كل ثقافة ومن ثم تختلف الإشاعة من مجتمع إلى آخر بحسب الوعي والاستجابة لبعض الإشاعات فمثلاً تختلف الإشاعة في المجتمع الغربي عنها في المجتمع العربي أو الشرقي وتختلف في المجتمع الحضري عن مثيلتها في المجتمع الريفي. وتوظف الإشاعة لأغراض مختلفة لتحقيق بعض الغايات التي تهدف إلى كسب مصالح معينة في مرحلة زمنية محددة ومن ثم تعمل الإشاعة على تفسير بعض الأفكار والاعتقادات التي تتوافق مع مروجي الإشاعة سواء كانت الحكومة أم الإعلام أم الناس أم بعض الأشخاص ولاسيما حينما يمر المجتمع في أزمنة معينة مما يسمح إلى خلق توجهات جديدة تتناسب مع حجم هذه الأزمة ولاسيما في الحروب والأوضاع الاقتصادية المتدهورة والأوضاع الاجتماعية المتازمة والإشاعة أهم سلاح يصار إليه في الحروب النفسية. ولها تأثير بالغ في المجتمعات ولاسيما في المجتمعات التقليدية لقلة الوعي وتدني المستوى التعليمي وهذا يعني أن الإشاعة ذات أبعاد مختلفة من الممكن أن توجه المجتمع على نحو إيجابي أو سلبي بحسب قوة الإشاعة والمروجين لها والأساليب المعتمدة فيها.
