|b This research aimed to identify the nature and types of drugs and the factors related to drug abuse and addiction. It also aimed to highlight the causes for the spread of the phenomenon of drug abuse and addiction among the youth. Moreover, the research tried to identify the effects of drug abuse and addiction among the youth in all aspects of life, in addition to the means to reduce the spread of this phenomenon. This was discussed by identifying the factors of prevention and the stages of treatment experienced by individuals. Besides clarifying the roles that must be played to prevent and protect against the risk of drug abuse, and by revealing the status of the role played by the family and the educational and media institutions in the prevention of drugs. The researcher adopted the documentary approach in conducting his research. This approach is based on the review of a number of previous literature that clarify the impact of drugs on the individual and on the different aspects of his life. Also, the approach relies on the factors related to the personal aspects. Such aspects are: The personal desire to feel happy and hope, or the inability to adapt properly with tension and pressure around, or the family factors such as family addiction to certain types of drugs, the mother’s use of drugs during pregnancy, or the use of improper upbringing patterns, whether they involved over-indulgence or excessive control. This is in addition to a number of economic and political causes associated with the society which may lead individuals to drug abuse. The researcher used the documentary office approach which is based on the review of previous literature that dealt with the spread of the drug phenomenon among the youth in order to answer the questions asked in the research. In general, it can be said that there are many reasons related to the individual’s drug abuse. The individual may resort to drugs in order to alleviate some of the symptoms he feels, and then completes using these materials even after the disease is gone, thinking that these substances can make him in good health. Also, children and teenagers who suffer from depression or other mental disorders may use narcotics in an attempt to overcome disorders as a form of self-medication. While others resort to drugs to feel happy and escape from the burdens and problems of life. Needless to say, the society’s perception of addiction and addicts and the patterns of family upbringing, whether lenient or dominant, is one of the most important factors that either help to stimulate or discourage the tendency to use drugs. The study has reached a number of findings. The most prominent are: There are two main types of drugs: Major drugs and minor drugs. Major drugs include: Opium and its derivatives, Hashish (Cannabis), Cocaine, Qat, Heroin, Marijuana and Amphetamine. While minor drugs include: Caffeine, Cola and Nutmeg. Drug abuse and addiction results in numerous negative impacts. These impacts affect many aspects. Such aspects are: Physical and mental, psychological, economic, environmental, high crime rates and academic performance of students. The presence of an effective and influential role played by the family, educational institutions and media is of great importance in terms of the prevention of children and students from drug abuse. The study yielded several recommendations, the most important of which are: Further future studies should be conducted. Such studies should attempt to highlight many other factors that may contribute, directly or indirectly, to the destruction of Arab generations and try to absent them from progress and civilization.
