المستخلص: The poetry of Abu-1-'Atahiya's has been a matter of dispute among both ancient and modern researchers. His poetry, biography and his lurch from asceticism to desire have stirred a lot of controversy that is still sustained to this day. Some researchers argue that he was a man of sincere asceticism to the extent that they accept his ascetic poetry. In the same vein, they maintain that the characteristics of his ascetic poetry, including sincerity of passion, outpouring of emotion and strong expression of ideas, can only be expressed by an artist who lived such a sincere experience. Others argue that Abu-1-' Atahiya had an innate readiness for asceticism and that his poverty and inferiority were among the major motivations for his ascetic behavior. On the other hand, other scholar claim that his asceticism is artificial and not sincere since his life was not a reflection of his poetry; he recited religious poems but he did not adhere to them in his practical life. Moreover, others have attributed to him such characteristics as Salaciousness, debauchery, greed, and love of money. Similarly, others accused him of effeminacy, atheism and corruption of orthodoxy. On the contrary, one of his contemporaries called him a “heavenly person”. Also, one of the contemporary researchers labeled him as the “pious poet”. This current research also displays the opinions of Abu-I- 'Atahiya's contemporaries who questioned his asceticism and accused him of atheism and avarice. The research also reviews the opinions of the other researchers who believe in his Islamic asceticism. To persuasively answer the questions of the study, the current research investigates the motivations, causes and origins of his asceticism and the history of his life.

لم يتفق الباحثون من قدماء ومحدثين حول شعر أبي العتاهية، حيث أثار شعر أبي العتاهية وسيرته واضطراب حياته بين الرغبة والتزهد جدلا، ما زال قائما حتى يومنا هذا، فقد اتهمه بعضهم بصدق تزهده وقبل منة أشعار الزهد التي نظمها ورأي أن صدق العاطفة وحرارة الانفعال وقوة التعبير عن الفكرة، وهي السمات الفنية التي تظهر في شعره الزهدي، لا يمكن أبدا إلا أن تكون صادرة عن فنان يعيش في تجربة صادقة وهناك من رأي أن أبا العتاهية كان لدية الاستعداد الفطري للزهد، وأن فقره وضعة أصلة كانا من بين الدوافع القوية له على سلوك سبيل الزهادة ومنهم من رأي أنه يتصنع الزهد ولم يكن يوما صادقا في زهده إذ يري أن حياة أبي العتاهية لم تكن مطابقة لشعره فقد أقام بنشد أناشيد الدين دون أن يتفنن في تطبيقها على الحياة العملية كما نعته بعضهم بالمجون والخلاعة والجشع وحب المال، واتهمه آخرون بالتخنث والزندقة وفساد العقيدة. بينما وصفه أحد معاصريه من الشعراء بأنه مخلوق سماوي ولقبه أحد الباحثين المعاصرين بالشاعر المتعبد الورع كما نتعرف في هذا البحث على آراء معاصري أبي العتاهية الذين شككوا في زهده واتهموه بالزندقة والبخل، ثم نبين آراء الباحثين الآخرين الذين يرون أن زهده إسلامي وذلك من خلال دراسة دوافع زهده وأسبابه ومصادرة وتاريخ حياته حتى نجيب عن الأسئلة جوابا مقنعا.
