520 |b Current debates concerning Islamic movements tend to all Islamic activism within the "fanatical” framework: we suggest here a more nuanced understanding. We begin by exploring what these terms might mean in an Islamic context by reviewing the background for the word ‘fanatic,’ and how it is currently applied. The movement we utilize as a case study is that of Fethullah Gulen's Hizmet organization. Accusations made by Turkey’s Erdogan have applied terms like fanatics, terrorism, extremism, etc. to Gulen and his followers. We argue that there solid evidence that the ideology of the North American group cannot be linked the current examples of fanaticism or terrorism. Rather, by analyzing oral statements of its leaders and the writings and publications of Gulen himself, the most operative word we encounter is moderation. We then suggest that the evidence connects it more convincingly to the contemporary Islamic reformist trend known as Wasatiyyah. Furthermore the Hizmet movement embraces a vigorous process of what might be known in religious circles as evangelism, designed specifically for the North American environment in which it hopes to grow. We then conclude that the most apt term that can be applied is a reformism along the lines of neo- Sufism as articulated by Fazlur Rahman and other scholars in the last century.
