Kanunnamah is an expression used by Ottoman officials to denote the collection of laws, by-laws, regulations and noble orders from the Sultan to governors of various provinces of the Ottoman Sultanate. Usually, any collection of laws described as Kanunnamah, are named after the Sultan during his reign these laws were either collected or proclaimed. There are two important collections: the one named after the Sultan Mehmet, the Conqueror, and the other, Sultan Suleiman, the Magnificent. The following text is a translation of the law ascribed to Sultan Mehmet, the Conqueror. A number of manuscripts and published text have been consulted to establish the text, which is the basis of this Arabic translation.
