يتناول البحث صورة الآخر الأجنبي في شعر محمود شوقي الأيوبي في النصف الأول من القرن العشرين، وهي الحقبة الزمنية الأهم في تشكيل الدول على صورتها الحالية في التاريخ الحديث؛ حيث عانت فيها معظم البلاد العربية من الأطماع الاستعمارية الغربية في أراضيها، ولذلك جاءت معظم صور الآخر الغربي في الشعر العربي سلبية نتيجة هذه الأطماع، لكن حضور الآخر الغربي في شعر الأيوبي لم يكن تقليديا نمطيا، بل فاعلا ومؤثرا ينبثق من فلسفة خاصة به تخلق تلازما بين الدال والمدلول، وتجد فكره وآراءه إزاء الآخر بشقيه الإيجابي والسلبي، ولعل حضور الآخر على اختلافاته العرقية والدينية في شعر الأيوبي، وآرائه المنصفة إزاءه سلبا وإيجابا تؤكد موضوعية الشاعر وتجرده في الطرح، على أنها تشير أيضا إلى الحس القومي العالي لديه، ومناهضته الاستعمار الغربي للدول العربية، والدول الإسلامية، والدول غير الإسلامية أيضا. وجاءت الصورة السلبية للآخر عند الأيوبي اكثر حضورا من الصورة الإيجابية، وكانت البلاد العربية وقتئذ ترزح تحت وطأة الاستعمار الغربي بأطماعه التوسعية لإعادة هيمنة عصر الإمبراطوريات الاستعمارية إلى الواجهة السيادية مجددا؛ فجاءت الصور السلبية متناولة الآخر الفرنسي، والبريطاني والألماني والهولندي واليهودي، وجاءت الصور الإيجابية متمثلة في مواقف الآخر السويدي والآخر الروسي الإيجابية من المعتركات الحربية في البلاد العربية، وبخاصة إزاء القضية الفلسطينية والعدوان الثلاثي على مصر عام 1956مء إضافة إلى مواقف الآخر الإندونيسي والباكستاني والأفغاني، وتأييد ثوراتهم الانفصالية الحالمة بالاستقلال.
