المستخلص: يري الكاتب الروماني ساليستيوس بأن يوغرطة لم يكن راضيا على أمر تقسيم المملكة النوميدية، لكنه تظاهر بالقبول والرضى لكي لا يواجه الرومان عسكريا، وليربح الوقت وينظم أمره وتتوضح لديه الأمور. وبعد موت العاهل ماسيبسا تمكن من القيام بغارة خاطفة على أذربعل مكنته من الحصول على الكثير من الغنائم.. مما دفع بأذربعل إلى تقديم شكاية إلى روما عن تهديدات يوغرطة. الذي كان قد حاصر العاصمة سيرتا لمدة أشهر وهدد مصالح روما، خصوصا بعد تدفق العديد من الشخصيات الرومانية البارزة إلى المدينة قبل ذلك، كما أن الامتيازات التي منحها الملك مسيبسا للرومان صارت مهددة.. ومع فشل اللجان الرومانية المرسلة إلى سيرتا أعاد يوغرطة حصار المدينة والاستيلاء عليها عام 112 ق م. مما دفع بالجالية الرومانية إلى إثارة الفتن بين ورثة العرش النوميدي وإعطاء ذريعة التدخل العسكري الروماني..
