| 520 | |b Since its inception in 1920, the OCP has been a development institution and its role continued to grow. Beyond its main productive function, the OCP played an economic and environmental role that had a direct impact on the local development of Morocco. The exploitation of phosphate has provided significant revenues for independent Morocco, as it did before to colonial France. It allowed for the construction of the two mining towns of Khouribga and Youssoufia. To facilitate the transport of mining products to the port, these two centers have been equipped with important infrastructure facilities that included railways, roads and public means. However, the facilities provided remain ‘weak’ compared to the Office’s profits. Moreover, the situation has created social inequalities that affected families and tribes and generated a categorization of society based on the income and work position. This social gap has also contributed to the emergence of customs and social phenomena that were, hitherto, totally or partially ignored. During half a century, phosphate production has gone through considerable fluctuations: Despite periods of decline, notably during the world crisis of 1929, the Second World War and the workers movement against exploitation and marginalization in comparison to French workers’ situation, a large production activity took place, and resulted in the birth of new working-class towns. | ||
| 520 | |d Depuis sa création en 1920, l’OCP est une institution de développement et son rôle ne cesse de s’agrandir. Au-delà de sa stricte fonction productive, l’OCP joue un rôle économique et environnemental qui a des répercussions sur le développement local. L’exploitation du phosphate a permis de fournir des revenus importants pour le Maroc ainsi que pour la France coloniale. Elle a permis la construction de deux villes minières : Khouribga et Youssoufia ; pour faciliter l’acheminement des produits miniers vers le port, ces deux centres ont été équipés d’infrastructures importantes notamment les chemins de fer, les routes et les établissements publics. Toutefois, ces équipements restent faibles par rapport aux bénéfices réalisés par l’Office ce qui a créé des contradictions sociales touchant les familles et les tribus et générant une catégorisation de la société selon le revenu et la profession. Elles ont contribué également à l’émergence de coutumes et de phénomènes sociaux jusque-là totalement ou partiellement ignorés. La production du phosphate pendant ces années a connu un développement majeur, ponctuée de périodes de déclin, notamment pendant la crise mondiale de 1929, la Deuxième Guerre mondiale et les périodes de grèves menées par les ouvriers dans le cadre de leurs luttes contre l’exploitation et la marginalisation subies par rapport aux ouvriers français. Suite à ces crises, succède une grande activité de production, ce qui a eu pour conséquence notamment la naissance de villes ouvrières nouvelles. | ||
