المستخلص: Bom in El-Hamma, a village in the South of Tunisia, Noureddine Ben Khedher was the son of a great Neo-Destourian nationalist who chose to join Salah Ben Youssef. Thanks to a grant from the Tunisian State, Ben Khedher studied in France where he joined the student opposition movement. In October 1963, he participated to the foundation of the group: Perspectives, and remained its main leader for almost a decade. Ben Khedher is considered as the founding father of the Tunisian New Left; he was the hand behind Perspectives’ affiliation to Maoism and effective entry into political action. This coincided with the emergence of a new generation of Perspectivists that differed from the founders: The members of this new generation came from rural areas of Tunisia, and were influenced by the Chinese Cultural Revolution. In 1968, the State Security Court (an exceptional court) sentenced Ben Khedher and his Perspectives comrades to heavy jail penalties. Other trials followed in the seventies. In 1974, while in prison, Noureddine Ben Khedher decided to leave the Perspectives group and to devote himself to culture. Ben Khedher was not the only Tunisian left-wing intellectual who believed in the major role that culture could play in social change. It is indeed to the cultural field that the Tunisian Left devoted itself and could make considerable achievements.

Issu du village du sud, El-Hamma, Noureddine Ben Khedher est le fils d’un grand nationaliste néo-destourien qui a rejoint les rangs de Salah Ben Youssef. Il a étudié en France grâce à une bourse de l’Etat tunisien. Cependant, il a rejoint l’opposition estudiantine. En octobre 1963, il a participé à la fondation du groupe Perspectives dont il restait le principal animateur pendant près de dix ans ; il est considéré même comme le père fondateur de la nouvelle gauche. C’est sous son influence que Perspectives a embrassé le maoïsme et s’est investi dans la politique. Cela coïncide en effet avec l’émergence d’une nouvelle génération de perspectivistes qui différaient de la génération des fondateurs. Originaire des milieux ruraux, cette nouvelle génération a été influencée par la révolution culturelle chinoise. En 1968, Ben Khedher et ses camarades de Perspectives ont comparu devant la Cour de sûreté de l’Etat qui les a condamnés à de lourdes peines. D’autres procès se sont succédés au cours des années soixante- dix. En prison, Noureddine Ben Khedher a décidé en 1974 de se retirer de Perspectives pour se consacrer à la culture dont le rôle est très important dans le changement social. Ce choix n’était pas propre à Ben Khedher, d’autres intellectuels de gauche y croyaient et c’était dans ce secteur que la gauche tunisienne s’était investie et réalisa des succès considérables.
