This paper aims to elaborate the efforts made in the Indo-Pak Subcontinent to defend the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him). These efforts included reactions against derogatory remarks in respect of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him), rejection of sunnah or its authenticity. In the Subcontinent during the colonial period, beside attacks on the personality of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) by non-Muslims, some individuals arose who questioned the authenticity of sunnah and relevance of hadith. These attempts later gave birth to heretic theologies and hadith rejection movement. To address this issue, many scholars served this noble cause both in written and practical form. Scholars from the Subcontinent produced high level multidimensional academic literature on the authenticity of sunnah and established argument against deviant individuals and cults like so-called Quranists and Qadyanis. They would hold conversation and discussion sessions with them and often staged demonstration and agitation to expose their heretic contentions. The paper discusses these historical events in descending order and also analyzes the role of judiciary and legislation from the era of the British to the blasphemy law enacted by the Pakistani parliament. |
