Studies in modern linguistics mostly relate to phonetics, the structure of the word (Morphology), structure of the sentence (Syntax) and Semantics. This article tries to highlight worthy contributions of the Qur’ānic exegets of the first three centuries A.H. seeing their abundant and profound knowledge and its application to the interpretation of the Qur’ān, we feel compelled to acknowledge their great contribution to the modern linguistics and we come to know that all the sciences of Arabic Language like Arabic sounds, morphology, syntax, semantics, and rhetorics etc. emerged to understand the Holy Qur’ān and to attain the best knowledge of the meanings and concepts it contains. Therefore, whoever wanted to interpret the meanings of the Holy Qur’ān is compelled to acquire profound knowledge of these sciences of Arabic language. Thus there is a strong correlation and inseparability between the Arabic sciences and the Qur’ānic sciences. We find that the contributions of the interpreters of the Qur’ān in the first three centuries to the above fields are praiseworthy in that these laid the basic and firm foundations of the linguistics. The commentaries on the Qur’ān written in the first three centuries after Hijrah have been the authentic source for the understanding of the Qur’ān. Hence, these commentaries should be relied upon for the linguistic study of the Qur’ān and Arabic literature as well. This article presents the linguistic study of Basmalah in the light of the Qur’ānic commentaries of the above mentioned era in order to illustrate the extent of Muslims' literary and linguistic contribution to the knowledge of the Qur’ān. |
