This paper pleads for revisiting religious discourse of the present times in the light of the numerous challenges encountered by Muslim culture and society. It argues that "enlightenment" does not have to be borrowed from external sources or incompatible premises originating from other systems of thought and foreign world-views. It tries to furnish grounds for re-appraisal of the current discourse from the sources of Islam. Hence the plea for enlightenment on Islamic terms aimed at achieving Islamic ideals through authentic Islamic procedures. The paper emphasizes the active role of reason, albeit, a reason fully conversant with and conforming to the standards of Islam. In the author's view, this reactivation of the function of Islamic rationality is necessary to revive Ijtihad for the purpose of seeking viable solutions to the new problems of life. |
