It is natural for man to look for means of catharsis in the hours of trouble and misery that affact his feelings and emotions. This kind of self-expression in Arabic Poetry appearing during the first half of the twentieth century has been discussed in this paper. After dealing with linguistic meaning and literary counotations of complaint (shakwā), the paper proceeds to analyze various specimens from the Arabic Poetry produced during the first half of the last century. Tracing the theme of complaint in the works of prominent poets, the author finds an abundance of this content in the target period. The paper highlights various stylistic modes of registering complaint to Allāh (SWT) adopted by different poets and finds it as one of the major themes of Arabic poetry during this period on account of its social peculiarities. |
