520 |b Among the inimitable traits of the Qur’ān are its rhymed endings of verses. These endings augment the effects of its communication. These also intensify the recitor's interest and involvement with the Qur’ān. The Muslim scholars have gone to great depths in their analysis of the Qur’ānic text starting from sounds, phonemes, syllables, words, phrases, sentences to verses and beyond. They found in the rhymed endings of its phrases and sentences a prominent expression of the Qur’ān's phonetical and musical richness reaching the level of perfection. The scholars writing on the miraculous elements in the language of the Qur’ān have shown the contributive role of these rhymed pauses (fawāṣil) in the over-all symmetry of the Qur’ānic composition. It is this symmetry running through the whole text which forms the basis of Qur’ān's inimitable character. Nearly all the significant scholars from al Rummānī, al-Zimakhsherī, Ibn Abī al-Aṣba‘ and others in the classical era down to the contemporary writers on the topic of inimitability have treated this stylistic category at length in great depth. Each of them has explained its aesthetic as well as symantic dimensions in great detail showing its significant status in the harmonious and symmetrical composition of the Qur’ān. A number of scholars have also exclusively treated this stylistic category and its various forms. This paper is particularly concerned with highlighting the phonetic aspects of the rhymed endings and their integrative link with the overall into national scheme of the verses/chapters in which these have been placed.
