The paper studies the term munkar al- ad th which is one of the important terms related to al-jar wa al-ta'd I (endorsing or discarding narrators). The importance of this term lies in the frequent use of it by ad th critics and its impact on determining the status of ad th narrators. However, we find that ad th scholars do not agree on the definition of this term and their opinions regarding its value in assessment of reports differ from one another. This paper attempts to describe the exact meaning of this term through an analytical study of the ad th critic, al-lm m Ibn Ab tim al-R z's use of this term in isolation or together with other terms. We find that this term has been used by him to identify the narrators who commit many mistakes in their narrations intentionally or due to weak memory or carelessness. Accordingly, the term refers to weak transmitters, regardless of their levels of accuracy; it includes narrators who are weak and hence abandoned (matr k), in addition to those whose narrations are worthy of consideration (a al-i'tib r). The exact level of the narrator can only be determined by examining the context of the words used by the critic and the evaluating statements of other Im ms related to the same narrator. This result differs from the view of some of the later and contemporary ad th scholars who assign a certain definition to this term and determine a fixed category to narrators who were labeled by it. |
