This paper examines the principles of criticism of ad th adopted by the traditionalists during the formative era of transmission. These early doctors examined the status of reporters and the value of the text of adīth as being the second source of the Islamic Shar 'ah which complements the Qur'ān and further elaborates its message. The paper explores the formulations and principles followed in the studies of adīth criticism. Furthermore, it addresses two issues: first the derivation of the critical methodology, and second, the actual process of adīth criticism and further development of that process. To achieve this purpose, the study looks into the possible effects of the social environment of an era on the critical methodology, its development and its objectives. It also analyzes the contribution of this approach to the over-all critique of adīth and highlights its negative and positive consequences. The study concludes with an overview of the standards applied by the scholars in adīth criticism and the subsequent development of these standards throughout the past years. |
