المستخلص: This paper addresses the role of Waqf in different dimensions of development. To formulate a comprehensive view of this important Islamic institution, various aspects have been touched. After defining Waqf, its validity and the concept of development from the point of view of Waqf, specific functions and aims of Waqf have been elaborated. The paper proceeds to address the role of Waqf in the over-all religious and cultural development of the Muslim society. Thereafter, it addresses the role of Waqf in the economic development particularly in the enhancement of social services and the maintenance of health-care. Finally, it treats certain current obstacles in this area and the presently shrinking role of Waqf. The paper concludes with some recommendations related to reviving the role of Waqf especially in the context of Palestine.
