In this paper, the writer traces the various important stages in the recording of the revelation since the Prophet's time, (pbuh). Proceeding from the earliest stage of the piecemeal revelation and preserving the revealed verses under the Prophet's guidance and instruction, he highlights the subsequent steps taken by the second and the fourth Caliphs. As the writer has demonstrated, this process of writing down was completed through a highly credible collective effort of the community of the Companions. He underlines the extreme care and caution exercised by the scribes of the Qur’an, who were selected by the Prophet (pbuh), himself, so as to supplement its preservation in the memories of the believers. In this respect, he highlights the significance of the standard master copy prepared under the aegis of the third Caliph. In addition to this historical survey, the writer explains the fundamental rules laid down by the scholars of Islam for correct recitation of the Qur’an including its authentic varied forms, showing that the authentic modes and standards maintained in the writing of the Scripture inter-alia contributed to observe the rules of its correct recitation. He concludes that the writing of the text of Qur'an from the earliest stages of the revelation fulfilled the highest criteria of authenticity since the Muslim scholars of all times exhausted their utmost potential in preserving the Book of Allah. |
