المستخلص: The paper investigates the relationship between Syntax and Rhetoric. It finds that both these disciplines have the same origin as reflected in their sources and objectives. The method of syntax, however, distinguished itself in regulating meaning and formation of sentence structures. Rhetoric separated itself from Syntax in the early fourth century AH. This separation became clear in "M fta al-Bal ghah by al-Sakk k", Increasing emphasis on the issues of construction in the works on Syntax further widened this separation with the passage of time. However, Syntax and Rhetoric could not completely separate themselves from each other since their discussions continued to interpenetrate. Our current curricula have been adversely affected by this division between the traditions of Grammer and Rhetoric. We still teach the two disciplines separately on the patterns of Alfiyat by Ibn M lik" and "M fta al-Bal ghah by al-Sakk k This continous separation results in serious problems for teachers and learners. Linguistic efficiency, however, calls for an integrative approach between Syntax and Rhetoric that brings them back as they were unified in the works of Al-Jurj n and Al-Zimakhshar. This approach is necessary to enable the two disciplines to perform their common function i.e. conveying the meaning and revealing the stylistic beauty.
