The paper proceeds to note that a gap between what is said and what is thought had struck Ibn Hazm which led him to think that language often served to mask thought. This suspicion provided him with a basis for reflection on language and its wider uses leading him to the notion of hir, the "apparent" or literal meaning of words. Ibn Hazm joined the hiri School and brought to it a systematic logical structure which was based on his analysis of the language. He evolved a hiri grammar in which he tried to eliminate the ambiguities that grammarians have been using to explain certain syntactical forms. He took the position that language itself provides all that is necessary for the understanding of its content and to communicate it. |
