The paper attempts to show the links of contemporary poets of Arabic with the classical heritage. These links, the writer contends, work to strengthen modern literature, enrich its concepts and renew life of poetry by its vital source which is traced to pre-Islamic times. In addition to conceiving varied patterns and models, the poet takes inspiration from pre-Islamic poetry and the spirit of the literary revolution witnessed in Abbasid era, according to the writer. Heritage, as the critics hold, is a living force which pushes the contemporary poet towards future, supplying endless energy and inspiration. The paper, tries to trace elements of heritage in the poetry of ‘Abd al-Ra m Ma m d. He shows the extent of this influence on the form and tenor of this contemporary Palestinian poet which, as the writer shows, carries a conspicuous element of Islamic content as well. |
