Some of the classical texts are filled with cognitive substance and energy either on account of the insightful meanings they provide or the boldness of their approach in treating given problematic issues. A good example is Sayr f's polemical debate with Matt bin Y nus that reveals the spirit of debate which complexioned the grammar and logic arguments in the fourth century Hijra. This debate conspicuously shows the richness of our heritage. This paper focuses on this debate by revealing the epistemological settings in which it took place. It demonstrates the position of studies in that era using three thematic strands: pre-debate struggle, intellectual state of affairs, surrounding the debate and the approach of Al-Taw d in his two works al-lmat’ wa'I-Mu' nasah and al-Muqbast, and finally post-debate situation of accommodation and adaptability |
