المستخلص: This paper examines the legal validity of genetic modification in vegetable foods in the Shari‘ah. These are the foods from vegetables produced through the use of transgene (the gene carrying genetic agents) from one living organism into the genetics of the other living organism in which genetic modification is sought. By means of genetic modification, genes from animals are collected and introduced to the plants, or vice versa. Similarly, genes from the animals are collected and transplanted into human beings. There are many factors that prompt this activity. These include increased production, better quality, and enhancing resistance to diseases and for administering medicine in human beings. Food scientists have differing views regarding the use of this technology between its supporters and opposers. The contemporary Muslim jurists also have difference of opinion regarding the legality of this process between permissible and non-permissible. The writer has taken the view of scholars who permit the use of genetic modification and maintain its legality in view of the strong arguments supporting their position. He believes that this position does not contradict objectives of Islamic Shari‘ah . However, the jurists who consider it legal, have allowed this activity under certain terms and conditions so that it is done for a valid reason and does not lead to any distortion in creation of Allah (SWT).
