المستخلص: The writer has selected the preferences made by the auther of Tafhim al-Qur’an out of a veriety of opinion advanced by early exegetes in interpreting certain verses of the Qur’an that admit more than one interpretation. The writer notes that Mawlana Mawdudi does not always cite this variety of opinion from early exegetes. However, he advances his own view and supplements it with his reasons for adopting it. The writer of the paper traces the early opinions from their sources and evaluates the opinion of Mawlana Mawdudi in her comments. At the same time, she identifies the criteria for preference (tarjih) discernible from the standerd sources of tafsir. The paper is concluded by some suggestions for improving the teaching of tafsir in the light of her findings in the paper.
