هدف البحث إلى تمثيل توزيع السكان في محافظة النجف كارتوكرافيا، حيث سعى الباحث أن يوظف المعلومات والبيانات في إعداد خرائط ذات دقة عالية في الرسم والتصميم، فضلاً عن الاستنباط والتحديث والتحليل، حيث تحتوي تقنية الــــــ (GIS) على إمكانات كبيرة في التحليل المكاني والوصفي، كذلك إظهار التباينات المكانية من جهة، والتوزيع المكاني من جهة أخرى وأسباب تباينهما، باتباع أسلوبي العرض والتحليل، اللذين يعتمدان على الخارطة بدرجة كبيرة لتحقيق عملية التوصيل الكارتوكرافي، فهي تمثل الهدف الأساس لصانع الخارطة. وهدف البحث إلى أعداد مجموعة من الخرائط المتخصصة التي تتناول توزيع السكان في محافظة النجف من جوانبها المختلفة وإبراز جدوى تحليل هذه الخرائط لإعطاء صورة متكاملة ومترابطة عن مظاهرها الجغرافية المختلفة وتوضح العلاقات المكانية المتبادلة فيما بينها وتأثيرها على بعضها، باستعمال التحليل البصري والقياسي وصولا إلى تحقيق أعلى قيمة إدراكية. وأظهر البحث تركز معظم الموارد البشرية في مركز قضاء النجف (المركز الإداري للمحافظة)، حيث يتركز (49%) من السكان على نسبة مساحة تصل إلى (1,57%) حسب تقديرات 2010. وأظهر البحث من تحليل منحني لورنز كبر مساحة عدم المساواة (مساحة التركز) الناتج عن تباعد خط التوزيع الفعلي عن خط التوزيع المثالي، هذا يشير إلى بعض التركز للسكان في مساحة قليلة من المحافظة حسب تقديرات السكان لسنة 2010، وتبين من دراسة التركيب البيئي للسكان في المحافظة أن هناك وحدات إدارية تزيد فيها نسبة سكان الحضر عن نسبة سكان الريف وهي مركز قضاء النجف ومركز قضاء الكوفة، ويعزى سبب ذلك إلى توسع المدينتين وعامل الهجرة السكانية، إذ تعد من المدن الجاذبة للسكان، لأنها المركز الإقليمي للمحافظة وتتركز فيها نشاطات وفعاليات متنوعة. وأخرى تزيد فيها نسبة سكان الريف على سكان الحضر.
