تعد دراسة التأثيرات البيئية للسياحية جانبا مهما في دراسات التخطيط الحضري والإقليمي نتيجة للتغيرات البيئة السريعة التي شهدها العالم من جراء السياحة. لذلك بنيت الدراسة على مشكلة مفادها أن للسياحة الدينية تأثيرات بيئية على بيئة مدينة كربلاء المقدسة حيث تؤدي إلي طرح العديد من الملوثات في الهواء والماء والتربة. فيما جاءت فرضية الدراسة والتي نصت على أن للسياحة الدينية تأثيرات سلبية على بيئة مدينة كربلاء المقدسة حيث تتطلب وضع سياسات صحيحة لحمايتها، وخصوصا وأن هذا النوع من السياحة أصبح يضاهي اغلب أنواع السياحة فلا بد من تسليط الضوء عليها وخصوصا فإن هذا النوع بدأه يتزايد وهذا التزايد في العدد له تأثيرات كبيرة على المكان فلا بد من سياسات صحيحة لإدارة مثل هذه السياحة بشكل صحيح دون أي تأثير سلبي يذكر. فقد جاءت البحث في ثلاثة مباحث، الأول للإطار النظري حيث جاءت عرض مفاهيم ومصطلحات في البيئة والتلوث والتلوث البيئي وعلاقه البيئة بالإنسان وكذلك التأثيرات السلبية للتلوث وكذلك جاءه في هذا المبحث عرض مفاهيم حول السياحة بشكل عام والسياحة بشكل خاص وكذلك معرفة العلاقة بين السياحة والبيئة وأيضا تم التطرق إلي دور التخطيط في السياحة للحد من التلوث. أما في المبحث الثاني قد أوضح فيه واقع حال منطقة الدراسة والذي جاءه فيه موقع وموضوع منطقة الدراسة وواقع حال السياحة الدينية وكذلك واقع حال الوضع البيئي في مدينة أثناء الزيادات. فيه الدراسة الميدانية المتعددة على استخدام معادلة الانحدار البسيط وتحليل استثمارات المسح الميداني. توصلت الدراسة ومن خلال استخدام معادلة الانحدار البسيط واستخدام معادلة الانحدار البسيط واستخدام المتغيرات الثلاثة فيها (عدد السكان، عدد الزائرين، كمية النفايات) وجده هناك تأثير كبير على المدينة من حيث ما يطرحه الزائرين من نفايات إثناء الزيارات الدينية، وكذلك عدم وجود قوانين وتشريعات تخص معالجة النفايات المطروحة أثناء الزيارات المليونية. فقد أوصي الباحث علي إصدار وتفعيل القوانين والتشريعات التي تنص على حماية البيئة عند أوقات الزيارة، تهيئة الكوادر الكفوءه والمتخصصة في مجال حماية البيئة والمسيطرة على التلوث أثناء الزيارات، توفير وتحسين الخدمات السياحية والتي تشمل شبكات الصرف الصحي ومحطات معالجة المياه، وكذلك نشر الوعي من خلال عقد ندوات ومؤتمرات للمواطنين من أجل الحفاظ على البيئة.
