بدأت الجغرافية في العقود الأخيرة تتوسع بموضوعات دراستها، وبدأت تركـز على الدراسات التطبيقية لاسيما المتعلقة بالتنمية التي ازداد الاهتمام بها في الآونة الأخيرة، بعدما حققت آثاراً إيجابية في رفاه السكان وتقدم الأقاليم والدول. وبما إن الجغرافية تدرس الظواهر وعلاقتها بالمكان، وإن التنمية لها حيزها المكاني فقد وجدت جغرافية التنمية وتطورت في دراسة الموضوعات التي تعالج مشكلات المجتمع ومتطلباته المختلفة. فتدرس جغرافية التنمية العلاقة بين عناصر البيئة الطبيعية والإمكانات الاقتصادية وتوزيعها المكاني وإمكانية استثمارها لخدمة السكان، من خلال إتباع استراتيجية تنموية فاعلة وتخطيط إقليمي ناجح، لذا فإن الجغرافية والتنمية يشتركان في دراسة كل شيء من شأنه يخدم الإنسان ويعمر الأرض. تضمن البحث أربعة مباحث تناول الأول منها مفهوم الجغرافية، وبحث الثاني مفهوم التنمية والفرق بين التنمية والنمو وأهداف التنمية وأبعادها، وقد تعرض المبحث الثالث إلى جغرافية التنمية والتخطيط الإقليمي، أما المبحث الرابع فكان حول أهمية الجغرافية في التنمية والتخطيط الإقليمي وختم البحث بالخلاصة والاستنتاجات وقائمة بالمصادر التي اعتمد البحث عليها.
