بنو وانودين أسرة بربرية الأصل، تنتمي إلى قبيلة هنتاتة المصمودية، وتنسب إلى عميدها يوسف بن وانودين، وقد أدت دورا كبيرا في تاريخ الموحدين منذ ابتداء دعواتهم على يد المهدي محمد بن تومرت في حوالي سنة 514 ه/ 1120 م وحتى أواخر عصر دولتهم وتحديدا سنة 665 ه/ 1266 م التي مثلت مطلع العهد القصير للخليفة الأخير الواثق أبي دبوس (665- 668 ه/ 1266- 1269 م). وقد تمثل ذلك الدور في مجال نشر الدعوة الموحدية، والقيادة العسكرية في المغرب والأندلس، وما يرتبط بها من دور سياسي معبر عن أسهامهم في تثبيت أركان الدولة الموحدية في مرحلة القوة، كما تمثل هذا الدور السياسي في انحيازهم إلى بعض أفراد الأسرة الحاكمة وتأييدهم على حساب البعض الأخر في مرحلة ضعف الدولة والإنشقاق الداخلي، فضلا عن الدور الإداري من خلال تولى بعض أفرادها منصب الوزارة والولاية على بعض المدن والمناطق المغربية. وقد ساعد على هذا الدور الكبير الذي نهضت به أسرة بني وانودين في دولة الموحدين، مسارعتها إلى اعتناق دعوة ابن تومرت، وولاؤها للأسرة الموحدية الحاكمة بشكل عام، وعقد بعض أفرادها علاقات مصاهرة معها، فضلا عن الكفاءة العسكرية والإدارية التي تميز بها بعض أفرادها. ومن ثم فقد كانت هذه الأسرة جديرة ببحث دورها في دولة الموحدين، ذلك الدور الذي لم تتوفر عنه-على حد علمنا- دراسة مستقلة أو ضمنية.
