BACKGROUND: The irrational use of drugs remains a key health problem in many developing countries. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to apply the WHO standard prescribing indicator of rational drug use to describe health worker’s prescribing practices. METHODOLOGY: Using WHO standard indicators of rational drug use, this study analyzed 600 prescriptions from 20 health facilities throughout Khartoum state, Sudan. RESULTS: A mean of prescribed drugs (2.8 ± 0.88). drugs by generic name (34.9% ± 25.8). The proportion of prescriptions for antibiotics was 56.64% + 30 injectable drugs 26.86% ± 27.1. A low percentage of drugs were prescribed from the essential drug list (50.1% ± 14.3). CONCLUSION: This study measured the performance of health centers and hospitals regarding the prescribing of drugs in Khartoum State, Sudan, using the WHO/INRUD prescribing indicators. With respect to prescribing indicators, results of the present study were much lower than that ones of the previous studies in Khartoum state except that of average drugs/encounter and encounters with injection prescribed.
