The banking sector is the backbone of economies in Africa, thus requiring them to be highly efficient to ensure good contribution to economic growth. In this regard, the core aim of this study is to analyze main characteristics of the banking sector in Africa. This study is divided into two parts, the first is an evaluation of the financial performance of African banks in general, using the indicators of financial inclusion, which refers to the ability of individuals and businesses to access and use financial and banking services effectively and at a reasonable cost. It measured by four sub-indices as follows: • banking density • the number of depositors and borrowers in banks per thousand inhabitants the number of users of • ATMs per 100,000 inhabitants the strength of legal rights and the depth of credit information The second part of the study is an analysis of the financial depth indicators, which covers the financial sector relative to the economy, and includes the following sub-indicators: • The size of the banking sector. • The efficiency of financial intermediation assets quality • Profitability indicators bank stability index • Structure of the banking industry Finally, the study concluded that the performance of banking systems is different due to the various levels of financial development in the African regions. In particular, South Africa, Nigeria, Mauritius and the North African countries have a highly developed banking sector, while most African countries have a shallow and weak financial sector.
