المستخلص: Several previous studies within insects have reported a female preference for larger male body size, with the transparent understanding that greater size allows for the possibility of a more substantial allocation of resource and thus increasing the success of female fertilisation. Growing research suggests that a large male body size reflects a greater capacity to produce larger spermatophores, making male size a potential useful tool as selection criterion for relevant female insect mate choice. The aims of this research were to investigate whether female Plodia. interpunctella preferentially selected larger males, whether or not these males produced larger ejaculates, and observing if this translated into increased reproductive success for males and females. As predicted, no significant difference in body size across the two treatments was observed. However, other dependent variables such as sperm numbers, eggs number, mating latency and duration of mating have shown significant difference between the two treatments. For example, males from the treatment small males ejaculate less sperm than males from the large treatment. This suggests that there is a trade-off between body size and reproductive traits as they perform less than ‘large’ moths.
