تعد الدراسات الاستشراقية واحدة من الدراسات المهمة في وقتنا الحاضر وذلك لأن العديد من المؤرخين والباحثين نظروا إلى الاستشراق والمستشرقين جزء من الحركة التاريخية التي أثرت في الحضارة والثقافة العربية الإسلامية كما لهم الفضل في مد جسور التواصل والتفاعل الحضاري بين الحضارات المختلفة ولكن هذه الدراسات لا تخلو من الشطحات والتفسيرات التي لا تستند على وقائع ثابتة أو روايات موثقة اذ وصل البعض منها إلى التزوير عن قصد للظواهر التاريخية كما أن البعض منهم من كان سبب في وضع الخطط والأفكار لتفتيت واحتلال العالم الإسلامي وهذا ما أكده برنارد لويس بقوله: (إما أن نضعهم تحت سيادتنا أو ندعوهم ليدمروا حضارتنا ولا مانع من إعادة احتلالهم على أن تكون مهمتنا المعلنة تدريب شعوب المنطقة على الحياة الديمقراطية). والجدير بالذكر أن هذا الوعي لم ينفرد به لويس بل أصبح ثقافة يمكن أن يرصدها غير المهتمين بالتاريخ ومنهم البار وغيره لذا كان من الواجب على أهل التاريخ أن يتعرفوا على هؤلاء المستشرقين وعن كل ما كتبوه عن تاريخ الإسلام الإيجابي ونبرز جوانبهم السلبية التي يحاولون من خلالها هدم الإسلام وتاريخه بصورة مباشرة أو غير مباشرة متعمدين أو غير متعمدين، لهذا جاءت دراستي لكتاب كارل بروكلمان (تاريخ الشعوب الإسلامية) لتبين الجوانب السلبية في كتابة فيما يخص حقبة الدولة الأيوبية في عصر الحروب الصليبية.
