تعد قناة السويس من أهم الممرات الملاحية في العالم حيث تقع على أهم الطرق التجارة العالمية بين آسيا وأوروبا حيث لعبت دورا استراتيجيا في تاريخ التجارة الدولية، حيث يمر بقناة السويس سنويا حوالي 17000 سفينة تمثل حوالي 8% من تجارة العالم و 24% من تجارة الحاويات ولكن تظل هناك إمكانيات اقتصادية غير مستغلة يمكن أن يستفاد منها بإضافة قيمة مضافة للمرور بقناة السويس وعدم الاكتفاء برسوم العبور بها والتي تبلغ 5.2 مليار دولار سنوياً (عن عام 2015)، وهذا رقم ضئيل جدا مقارنة بما تحققه دبي من خدمات لوجستية للنقل البحري وإدارة موانئ حوالي 18 مليار دولار وما تحققه سنغافورة في حدود 35 مليار دولار. أظهرت نتائج الدراسة: أن إنشاء قناة جديدة موازية للأصلية وكذلك إنشاء المنطقة الاقتصادية لقناة السويس، وعدم اقتصار المنطقة على وظيفة المعبر التجاري فقط، سوف يرفع من تصنيف قناة السويس كأحد أهم الممرات الملاحية في العالم، بحيث تمتد وظيفتها لتكون مركز صناعي ولوجستي عالمي لإمداد وتموين النقل والتجارة، وتحويلها إلى منطقة لجذب الاستثمار الأجنبي المباشر من أنحاء العالم بهدف تنمية الاقتصاد المصري. أهم توصيات الدراسة: يجب العمل على تنفيذ مشروع المنطقة الاقتصادية لقناة السويس وفق المعايير العالمية للخدمات البحرية بما يزيد من قدرة وتصنيف القناة ... كما يساعد على المنافسة في مجال الخدمات البحرية، ويمثل هذا المشروع أو خطوة لاستغلال الطاقات الاقتصادية لهذا المكان الفريد وللاستفادة القصوى من هذا المورد الأصيل، لذا تعتزم الحكومة المصرية البناء على هذه الفرص التي يتيحها تاريخ قناة السويس لتحويلها إلى محور اقتصادي عالمي ومن ثم المساهمة في التنمية طويلة الأجل.
