This study aims to assess the effects of changes in energy price on the economic growth in Egypt using annually data from 1952 to 2013. In This study, we used the VAR model, the Johansen technique of cointegration and the Vector error- collection model to investigate the causality relationship between the growth in energy prices and the growth in GDP in Egypt. The estimation results for bivariate model indicate that there is a positive causal relationship between the oil price chocks and the economic growth, and the oil price chocks are the main source for the changes in economic growth. On other hand, there is no causal relationship between the natural gas price chocks and the economic growth. Moreover, The results show that there is evidence for asymmetry in the energy prices -output relationship for Egypt. The estimates support that the positive oil price chocks granger - causes the economic growth in Egypt and they are the main source for the changes in economic growth, but that is not the case with the negative oil price shocks. On the other side, the results do not confirm the existence of granger causality relationship between the positive natural gas price shocks and the economic growth or between the negative natural gas price shocks and economic growth. Moreover, the results using multivariate model indicate that there is a long-run equilibrium relationship between the real exchange rate, the price index, output and the energy prices. The estimates show that there is no short-run and long-run granger causality relationship between the oil price shocks and the economic growth or between the oil price shocks and the price index . however, The estimates show that there is a long-run granger causality relationship between the oil price shocks and the. real exchange rate, where An increase in real oil price declines the real exchange rate in the long run. The estimates also show that the natural gas price shocks granger- cause the economic growth in the short-run, the real exchange rate in the long run, and the price index in the short-run and in the long-run.
